in the neighborhood are seeing. what's so remarkable is that the older brother, tamerlan tsarnaev, he has been dead since this morning, so all this is the result of one man potentially on the loose. so that one man, dzhokhar tsarnaev, has caused this kind of havoc, if not a lot more strong words. you mentioned kerry sanders. he's elsewhere in watertown. katie was describing you being on the ground. we've seen you in all sorts of positions. just really an exhausting time for you because you're keeping right up with the emotions of the police, that community. it's been like a wild roller coaster there. >> alex, i think i am probably a reflection of what a lot of people in their homes have felt like here, being trapped, waiting for some sort of information and wondering. glued to their televisions. just trying to find out what is going on. you're in your home. it's dark out. you hear a commotion. you look outside and there you see police officers in s.w.a.t. gear. it's been quite an ordeal for folks here. as you pointed out at times we have found ourselves up close and personal to some very tension mo

. but some of them tied directly to them. authorities believe one of the sites tarred to tamerlan tsarnaev tied to youtube video has emergence of black flags. that is key part of jihadist mythology, al qaeda's main publication for afghanistan, pakistan, is named van guards, shorthand. the myth that muslims will win the first battle against their enemies beginning of armageddon in corazon, afghanistan, pakistan, parts of iran and central asia. and the last battle will be fought. this does not make them al qaeda but perhaps they sympathize or at least tamerlan did with that cause. we're being cautious here. it is a link on a page. there are number of links on a page authorities believe was tied to tamerlan. they are looking at all of this. it they're also seeing that perhaps the 26-year-old was in fact more of a leader in this. and the 19-year-old less of one. we talked about, 19-year-old dzhokhar tsnaraev coming to the country with family in roughly 2002, maybe early 2003. we can't confirm when tamerlan came into the country. it may be a separate time, actually. we also can't confirm whethe

man is his brother, 26-year-old tamerlan tsarnaev. he's the older brother. he is now dead, killed in a wild overnight police shootout. these two brothers said to be from a russian region near chechnya and believed to have been in the u.s. for quite some time. in the hours since the fbi first made the images public, we also received this chilling photo. look at this. can you see it? we've sort of blocked -- we've blocked the faces. it's actually not that user friendly now that we've blocked the faces, but it appears to show one of the suspects standing behind the 8-year-old little boy, little martin richard, who was murdered at that marathon at the second location. this is the second bombing on monday. you can see the backpack on the bottom, you can see the suspect in the back, and you can see the 8-year-old in the full screen picture that settle original of what we're showing you here. >> that suspect, disok dzhokhar tsarnaev, his uncle was pronouncing his name differently in the i in media. suspect number two in the white hat seen a few feet away from the 8-year-old victim. just

. the older brother, tamerlan tsarnaev, was 26. nbc news learned he spent six months last year outside of the country. authorities are still piecing together where he went and what he did during that time. there are many questions tonight. joining me to help answer them is nbc investigative correspondent michael isikoff and former director of the national counterterrorism center michael leiter. and former fbi profiler clint van zandt. let me start with michael leiter. the other day, it seems like a year ago, two, three days ago you, had this sense, professional instinct, if you will, that this killer, one of the two bombers, was a local. tell me how you came to that assessment. >> well, chris, my take -- >> he is a local. >> he is a local and he's got deep ties to boston. and my take was there's no doubt that the boston marathon is a worldwide known event, but unlike many of the targets, a lot of people really have used in the past, there's something specific to boston about it. there's something specific about the finish line and about patriots day and my take from that was that this
, but the older brother, dead, tamerlan tsarnaev, has been living in america since 2007. tell me your thoughts on what happened here. he's living in america since '07 and at some point, turns and decides he wants to kill americans. what would be your take in terms of the psychology and what these two are thinking or were thinking? >> well, we don't know, but we're about to find out. some say there might be a hybrid here, like major nidal hasan was radicalized via the internet, yet there was another soldier at ft. hood, an enlisted man, who built two explosive devices just like the ones we see used in boston because he had access to the same internet magazines that these guys did, but at ft. hood, he used it to kill soldiers for his own personal reasons, not necessarily anything that had to do with religion or politics. in this particular case, because perhaps the older brother was radicalized, had influence on the younger brother, who's the fugitive right now, we may find this is something like a timothy mcveigh. in essence, the target was not so specific, but the target was located because he
says that the fbi came to their cambridge house two years ago to interview tamerlan tsarnaev, the older brother. >> before he went to russia? >> before he went to russia. so they have some record of him, some reason why they went and interviewed him. >> that is something. after he knew he was a subject of interest, he went over and took that trip. >> right. >> let's get back to whdh. >> they are just trying to secure the scene so that way they keep themselves safe and of course the people in and around the immediate area safe as well should this person possess any dangerous, lethal types of weapons. >> all right. thank you. let's go back to steve cooper with new information. >> i was just speaking with another source who is close to the scene. i'm now being told that there's no movement in the boat. i'm also hearing that he may be bleeding out and not -- and it's not safe to approach and again the reason why is concern of possible explosive devices that he may have on him or with him. so -- >> let's get the image on screen right now. this is the house with the boat behind you. this is n
